This was written and performed as slam poetry by my son for his grade 12 English class. I thought it was pretty insightful and ultimately a positive message.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

We start off in life with the world at our fingertips,
\nwith the words: \u201cYou can do anything\u201d coming out of our parents very lips
\nAnd for years these words of motivation stick with you
\nfueling dreams of being celebrities, astronauts and rock stars too
\nThe World seemed so big, so vast so full of adventure
\nThose in dentures would give us such a lecture
\nAnd so we believe with all our hearts and happy thoughts
\nThat life is a happy place where only in movies are battles fought<\/p>\n

But then comes adolescence, and with it comes the many doubts
\nFor many once seemingly perfect family lives become full of arguments and shouts
\nYou see atrocities every day on the television
\nat first these stories hurt you, on your heart they make an incision
\nBut with this reality creates an invisible division
\nYour idea of the world has toppled like a house of cards
\nAnd with this destruction of an old understanding
\nsprouts a negative ideology against which we should guard<\/p>\n

With this newfound negativity \u00a0come new thoughts and mindsets
\nwe make bets with ourselves, putting money against us
\nWe kill that old saying \u201cYou can do anything\u201d
\nThinking \u201cI could never do this, i\u2019m not good enough, i\u2019m not good at anything\u201d
\nWhen really these are just excuses to take the easy path
\nI mean if we\u2019ve already given up then why put in the effort and try
\nIt\u2019s on that cheesy poster it\u2019s simple math
\n\u201cYou miss 100% of the shots you don\u2019t take\u201d It\u2019s true, in life you either take a shot, or sit and wait to die.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s what many of us do, we\u2019re all addicted to it, an entire nation
\nstrangled by what we joke about – procrastination
\nWe need to release from the shackles, locked up by ourselves
\nTake OUR selves off of the shelves
\nStop skimming on the top of the waters of life and delve
\ndeep into the depths of it and discover our full potential
\nUnleash our inner thoughts and dreams and stop keeping them confidential.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
